Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Posted on December 6, 2013

As I’m sure all you Durham uke enthusiasts out there know, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain played Duke’s Page Auditorium last Sunday, the 24th of November. The group is comprised of 8 ukulele players on ukes of various sizes, from sopranino to bass ukulele, and every member sings as well. They play a huge variety of genres, from Tiny Tim to Prince. Highlights included a mash-up version of Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love.” The show is interspersed with joke-telling and general good humor, emphasizing the idea the group was built on; namely, that music should be fun.

After the show, Duke Performances in conjunction with your very own High Strung, hosted an after-party/uke hang at Fullsteam Brewery. There, fans, jammers, and the Orchestra members knocked back a few brews and talked ukuleles. Many thanks to the High Strung Uke jammers, the Durham Ukulele Orchestra, Duke Performances, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and the wonderful Marilee Annereau.
